The hidden problem of overconsumption

 

Late at night, Aisha sits on her bed while scrolling on TikTok. As she saw one video that shows a girl buying new clothes and trying them on. Aisha watches for a few seconds, then opens a shopping app and adds the same items to her cart.

“I just wanted to try it” she says, even though she knows she doesn’t really need them. The next day, she forgets about most of the items she bought.

Some studies show that social media can make people buy things quickly, especially when people see ads or influencers talking about products they are interested in. Companies use attractive images or offers to make products look more interesting. Also, online shopping makes it very easy because people can buy things quickly with just clicking on the screen.

 

Aisha looks at the clothes she bought last week and feel a bit confused. Some of them are still new, but she already feels bored of them. “I thought I really wanted these” she says, “but now I don’t even like them that much.” She remembers how excited she felt when she first saw them online, but that feeling did not last long with Aisha. Just like Aisha, many people go through the same situation.

 

Overtime, many things get wasted. Many items are only used once or twice and then suddenly it’s left over or thrown away. This does not only affect people, but also the environment gets affected as well. It creates more pollution. In addition, people may spend a lot of money on things they do not really need, which can cost for them so many problems later.
